Climate change is at the top of the political agenda. Governments around the world are promising to do much more to move from a fossil fuel economy to one based on renewable energies and greater efficiency. But time is short.
To keep the rise in temperatures below the 1.5°C threshold, carbon dioxide emissions globally would have to be cut by 45% by 2030 and be down to net-zero by 2050, concluded the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2018. But the world is way off target. Last year, global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions rose 1.7% to a historic high of 33.1 gigatonnes, estimates the International Energy Agency.
To reverse this trend as quickly as possible, those working in the energy sector — from engineers to law makers, from investors to lobbyists — need to have access to the right information.
FORESIGHT Climate & Energy’s team of expert journalists works to cut through the noise and analyse the best and most timely ways of transforming society and the economy away from oil, coal, and natural gas to wind, solar, and hydrogen power and increased efficiency.
There has never been so much information at hand as there is today. But much is quickly written “churnalism”, designed to grab attention in social media feeds. At the other end of the scale is the continual flow of detailed reports. Few people have the time to pick their way through these tomes and give them the attention they deserve.
Independent journalism, where writers have the time to step back, think, and analyse an issue with the help of experts is therefore vital. FORESIGHT Climate & Energy fills this space for the global energy transition. Our journalists examine the potential solutions and barriers to the move to a clean energy economy through clear in-depth articles enlivened by infographics, photographs, and illustrations.
Al Gore, former Vice President of the United States, recently described climate change as “our generation's life or death battle”. At FORESIGHT, we believe that facts and figures, well written in-depth analysis, expert opinions, and pertinent images are imperative to win this battle, to adapt to the already unavoidable impacts of climate change, and transition to a cleaner, greener, more sustainable future.
