Taiwanese SME O’right is shaping the future of beauty, while serving as a global benchmark for sustainable business practices
A shampoo that can grow into a tree? It’s hard to imagine, but such a groundbreaking innovation does exist.
Thirteen years ago, Taiwan’s Steven Ko embraced the burgeoning sustainability trend and founded the green beauty brand O’right, thus beginning his journey towards a zero carbon world. Since then, the company has established itself as a high-impact brand and an international benchmark for sustainable practices.
As a pioneer in raising the standard for sustainability, O’right is committed to developing innovative solutions for a greener future. In 2011, the world’s greenest beauty brand impressed everyone with the first carbon neutral shampoo. The following year, the newly constructed O’right Green Headquarters became the first Diamond-level green cosmetic factory in Asia.
To move towards a more circular economy, O’right began rethinking plastic packaging. In 2016 and 2018 respectively, the world’s first 100% renewable plastic shampoo bottle and renewable plastic pump were introduced. In 2018, O’right became the first company in Asia to have their product bottles receive the EuCertPlast certification issued by leading German experts Cyclos. Recently, it obtained the USDA Certified Biobased Product Label, which displays the biobased content of a product that comes from a renewable source. This not only helps reduce fossil fuel use, but also moves the company further towards a circular economy.
With long-standing commitments to everything from green products and green manufacturing to green logistics, green energy, and green initiatives, the company’s ambition to building a more sustainable world is reflected in its efforts and achievements around the world.
O’right has never been just a hair and skin care company: it is a brand dedicated to giving people, society, and the environment the best care they deserve. The green advocate has also been the initiator of the world’s largest environmental movement Earth Hour in Taiwan for 9 years and recently joined RE100 to make a global, public commitment to 100% renewable electricity by 2025.
“We aspire to be great instead of big in scale, taking giant leaps to make a big difference,” Steven Ko, Chairman of O’right emphasized. Sustainability at the heart of its business, and O’right is living proof that small steps can make big changes to the environment and society.
As a sustainability leader, and the only voice representing Taiwanese SMEs at the 2019 UN Climate Change Conference (COP 25) and World Climate Summit - The Investment COP in Santiago, Chile this December, Ko is ready to bring the green achievements of O’right to the world.
